Seville, May 17th 2021 | The technological company Wellness TechGroup has taken stock of its latest innovation projects for the sustainable and Smart management of municipal solid waste (MSW) on the occasion of Global Recycling Day, which is celebrated every May 17th and promoted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
Smart waste management remains as one of the main axes of Wellness TechGroup’s activity, in line with its commitments to recycling and protecting the environment. The company has engaged on various innovation initiatives aiming to maximize the efficiency of the waste collection service, transforming cities into smarter, more sustainable, welcoming and cleaner scenarios.
Supercontenedor project in Seville
The Supercontenedor project, promoted by the Andalusian Technological Corporation (CTA), in collaboration with the Wellness TechGroup, Lipasam and the Waste Engineering group of the Andalusian Industrial Research and Cooperation Association (AICIA), seeks to promote the implementation of a system for the selective municipal collection of bio-waste in the city of Seville, mainly biodegradable waste from parks, gardens and leftover food.
The project proposes a selective collection of bio-waste, which may be for up to 50% of all domestic garbage produced, has a high potential to contribute to the development of a circular economy, providing valuable materials for the improvement and fertilization of soils, as well as biogas, a renewable energy source.
Supercontedor aims to optimize the collection of this waste in a system based on an improved brown container, which makes it possible to deal with odour problems, rationalize the resources allocated to collection by basing it on filling level, and also minimizing the inconvenience for citizens and meeting national and European objectives in the field of waste recovery and recycling.
As a result, it is expected to obtain a characterization protocol for the generation of odors, a deodorization system based on the performance of a chemical agent, to verify and validate that the chemical agent does not have adverse effects on subsequent waste recovery activities, the integration of the deodorization system with fill level sensors and the development of an algorithm to optimize the collection around the odor emission and fill level parameters, as well as correlate the data generated by the access control and identification of citizenship.
Santiago de Compostela hosts the Smartiago initiative
Within the Smartiago project, a budget of € 466,200.00 (excluding taxes) is allocated to the development of a Smart MSW collection system. The aim will be to address the following needs faced by municipal management: increase the city’s waste recovery rate by focusing on the origin of waste separation based on citizen behaviour, and hotel and restaurant habits; audit the current system and introduce innovative technological solutions into waste management, and increasing the number of digitized services offered.
The main objective of the contract is the design, development and construction of smart surface containers for the characterization of organic solid waste based on the use of open IoT technologies, the application of machine learning algorithms and the use of open data as sources for the enrichment of prediction models with contextual information.
eRoute will define an innovative route management system
The eRoute initiative, carried out by Wellness TechGroup, aims to define an innovative route management system with a high research nature, with potential for market insertion and high replicability in the future. eRoutet will develop modules that carry out the extraction of data from the different technologies and sources to carry out the control, monitoring and optimization of waste collection, and a route management algorithm. In addition, it will validate the integrated platform.
It will be tested in a test environment that makes it possible to demonstrate the viability of the project, which is based on open data, data from volumetric sensors, artificial vision, a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a fleet inventory.
Q-Universe innovation project
The Q-Universe project applies the range of Quamtra sensors from Wellness TechGroup to optimize waste measurement and add new functionalities to the management platform by including user identification, access control and pay-per-use, and the provision of variables of odor measurements using an electronic nose.
This initiative aims to optimize the collection of bio-waste based on the filling level and the emission / perception of odors, reduce operating costs, the carbon footprint and energy consumption derived from transport logistics and collection of the bio-waste fraction, and increase the quality of the urban environment and people’s health.
In the same way, it aims to develop commercial products tailored to container manufacturers, local entities, urban waste management companies and ICT services, and consulting firms, among others; in addition to creating potentially replicable products.
